Since then, he has worked in the Southwest Region, the GDC Public Information Office, the Internal Affairs Unit, the OPS training unit and served as the GBI/GDC OPS Basic Agent Class Coordinator.

Capt. Heard is a Georgia P.O.S.T. certified senior instructor, firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, Taser instructor, use of force instructor, and field training officer. He also possesses his intermediate and advanced certifications along with supervisor and managerial certifications.

Capt. Heard earned an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Manchester Connecticut Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Grantham University in Kansas, and a master’s degree in Public Safety Administration from Columbus State University.


Captain Jalon Heard honorably served in the United States Army for eight years and began his law enforcement career in 2008 in the uniform patrol division of the Perry Police Department. Nearly four years later, he was promoted to field training officer and in 2014 was promoted to Uniform Patrol Sergeant.

Capt. Heard then joined the Georgia Department of Corrections, Office of Professional Standards, in 2016 as a Special Agent and graduated from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations/GDC Basic Agent Class that same year.
